A Gilbert family is in mourning after their 15-month old son died unexpectedly Wednesday of complications from a cold.
Haley Wester Schmidt said her son, Logan, passed away at Phoenix Children's Hospital on Wednesday the morning after he went into cardiac arrest.
She said her son, who had no apparent health issues and had never been sick before, was having trouble breathing Tuesday evening. She called 911 and tried to administer CPR, but his heart stopped beating.
Doctors were able to resuscitate him, but he had no brain function, she said. He passed away Wednesday morning.
"We were able to hold him while he did (he passed)," she said.
She described Logan as the "sweetest boy, who absolutely loved everyone." She said he's going to be buried in her hometown of Natchitoches, Louisiana, so his grandfather can keep an eye over his grave.
The family moved to Gilbert 3½ years ago after Schmidt's husband, Luke, served 11 years in the military before retiring as an Army major. They also have a 3-year-old son, Liam.
"He (Liam) seems sad," Schmidt said. "He just keeps asking where his brother is."
She also thanked Gilbert fire and Chandler police, as well as doctors with Phoenix Children's, Chandler Regional Medical Center and a medical helicopter crew, for working to keep him alive.
"We feel so grateful," Schmidt said. "They did an amazing job. They were so dedicated. They stayed in the hospital the whole time."
Natalie Tristan, who is friends with the Schmidts, posted a message Wednesday on Facebook that said Logan was in the hospital. The post was shared more than 7,500 times in less than 24 hours.
